A Fair Summer Night

About a week ago I headed off to the Fredericksburg Agricultural Fair to do some evening shooting. Rides and people whizzing by on a summer evening often makes for warm, comforting photographs that help relive many childhood memories. Some of the best shots at events like these take place in an area with lots of people traffic and a stationary object like this food stand. You get the people rushing by, while others remain stationary as the rides glow all around. This has turned out to be one of my favorite photographs...

Here are a few more from the same evening.

Dream Drive

While heading back south to central Virginia this weekend, I decided to take the camera out for a little experimentation (perhaps out of boredom as well?). I love focus blur (changing focus as the photograph exposes) and the wide range of artistic experimentation possible with this technique. See more here in the Flickr.com group Focus Blur.  So I set my camera up, ISO 800 1 second exposure, F2.8... Click.

I really like the way this came out (personal satisfaction... isn't that what it's all about!?). The high ISO added a nice film grain appearance, especially on the trees at the left of the shot. The focus blur gave me nice giant bokeh orbs with the in focus light trails inside. I even like the transparent windshield wiper at the bottom. I like to think this is what the passenger sees. As you are slipping in and out of sleep. The rhythm of the road pulses in waves, until finally sleep settles in.

The only processing on this raw file was done in adobe camera raw (color, contrast, curves).  This just goes to show that you should always carry your camera with you. Even when you think there is nothing to shoot. There is and it's right in front of you. So go. Get out there!

Also from that same drive...
